The Body

Grooming as maintenance, not vanity — the routines that take five minutes and actually work.

The Body
01

Skincare

A routine only works if you'll actually keep doing it six months from now. Keep it to cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen — morning and night for the first two, sunscreen every day you're outside. Everything past that is optional refinement, not a requirement.

Why so minimal

Complexity is the main reason skincare routines fail — a ten-step routine skipped after two weeks does nothing; a two-step routine kept up for years does a great deal. Fragrance-free products reduce irritation risk and work exactly as well as scented versions.

02

Showering technique

Lukewarm, not hot — hot water strips the skin's natural oils, which is why skin often feels tight right after a very hot shower. Wash the areas that actually produce odor (underarms, groin, feet) thoroughly; the rest of the body needs less attention than most people assume. Five to ten minutes is enough.

How often

Once daily is standard for most people; twice daily with heavy scrubbing tends to dry and irritate skin rather than improve cleanliness.

03

Shaving method

Shave after a shower, once facial hair has been softened by warm water and steam — this alone prevents most razor burn. Go with the grain of hair growth first; only go against it on a second pass if you want it closer, and expect more irritation if you do.

The blade matters less than you think

A sharp, fresh blade causes fewer nicks and less irritation than a dull one pressed harder to compensate. Replace blades more often than feels necessary — for most people that's every 5–7 shaves, not weeks.

04

Hair care

Bring reference photos to your barber, not just a description in words — the gap between what you describe and what you picture is often large. A cut chosen for your specific face shape and hair texture matters far more than chasing whatever's trending.

Upkeep

A trim every 3–4 weeks keeps a shaped cut looking intentional rather than grown-out. A small amount of product (a pea-sized dab, not a handful) styled into slightly damp hair goes further than most people expect.

05

Nail maintenance

Trim weekly, cutting fingernails straight across to prevent ingrown edges, and file down any sharp corners. Clean gently under the nail — a buildup there is one of the more noticeable small hygiene misses.

06

Fragrance philosophy

One or two sprays on pulse points, applied in the morning so it's faded to a light trace by the time you're around people for a full day. If someone can smell you from across the room hours later, it's too much.

In shared spaces

Many people are sensitive or allergic to synthetic fragrance. In close, shared spaces — an office, an elevator, transit — it's worth going noticeably lighter than personal preference alone would suggest, or skipping fragrance in favor of a fragrance-free deodorant and simply clean, fragrance-free laundry.
