Stop postponing
The quiet error of single life is deferral: the trip you will take when you have someone to go with, the decent furniture you will buy when you settle down, the holiday traditions that are on hold. Years pass this way. Buy the real bed frame and the good knife now. Take the trip alone or with a friend. Make the full dinner for one and eat it at the table. None of it has to be undone if you meet someone, and all of it is your actual life in the meantime.
The practical side
A couple has redundancy built in, and you need to build your own.
- Keep a larger emergency fund than a couple would, closer to six months of expenses than three, because there is no second income behind you.
- Give a spare key to a nearby friend, and tell that friend where you are when you travel or go on a first date.
- Name an emergency contact with your employer and your doctor, and sign a health care proxy so that someone you chose can speak for you if you cannot. The form is free in most states and needs no lawyer.
- Name beneficiaries on your retirement accounts and any life insurance, because those forms decide who receives the money.
- Look at disability insurance through your job, since your ability to earn is the only income in the household.
People, on purpose
A partner supplies daily company by default, so a single person has to schedule it. Aim for standing arrangements rather than one-off plans: the weekly dinner with a friend, the Saturday class, the regular call with a sibling. Two or three fixed points in a week are enough to keep a solitary evening pleasant rather than heavy. Learn to enjoy a restaurant bar, a film or a museum alone.
Other people's opinions
Relatives will ask. A calm, closed answer works best: "I am happy with my life, and I will let you know if there is news." You do not owe a progress report. If you want a partner, say so without apology and date with intention. If you do not, that is also a complete answer. Be wary of choosing someone mainly to end the questions, since that is the most expensive way to win an argument.
Tip Learn five dinners that scale down well to one portion, and freeze the rest in single servings. Eating properly alone is the habit that holds the others in place.
