The money
AAA's yearly estimate of the cost of owning and running a new car has stood above $10,000 for some time, once you add up depreciation, insurance, fuel, maintenance, registration and finance charges. A paid-off older car costs less, but rarely under $4,000 to $5,000 a year with parking and repairs. A car-free budget of $200 to $400 a month covers a transit pass, a bike, regular ride-hail trips and an occasional rental, and still leaves most of the saving in your pocket.
The address decides
Whether this works is settled when you sign a lease. Before you do, check these things on foot and at the hours you will really travel.
- A transit line that runs every fifteen minutes or better should be within a ten-minute walk.
- The trip to work or school should take under forty-five minutes door to door, including the wait.
- A full grocery store and a pharmacy should be within a mile.
- Service should still be running at the hour you come home at night and on Sundays. A slightly higher rent in the right spot is usually cheaper than a low rent that forces you to buy a car.
Build a mix
No single mode covers everything. Use transit and walking for the routine, a bike for trips of one to five miles, and ride-hail for late nights, bad weather and running late. Hourly car sharing, where it exists, suits the furniture run and the big shopping trip, and a weekend rental covers the visit to relatives in the country. Carry groceries in a folding cart or panniers, shop smaller and more often, and have the heavy, bulky goods delivered. If your employer offers a commuter benefit, you can pay for transit with pre-tax dollars up to a monthly limit that the IRS adjusts each year.
Keep your options open
Renew your driver's license on schedule, since you will need it for rentals and it remains the standard identification. If you rent or borrow cars more than a few times a year, a non-owner liability policy costs a few hundred dollars a year, covers you in any car you drive and keeps your insurance history continuous. Insurers often charge more after a gap in coverage when you do buy a car again.
Note Review the arrangement once a year. If you are spending more than about $500 a month on rides and rentals, or turning down work and visits because of the travel, a modest used car may have become the cheaper answer.
