Wiping, in more detail
Pat or wipe gently and stop when the paper comes away clean. Scrubbing hard causes the itching and soreness that people then mistake for not being clean enough. If paper alone irritates you, dampen it with water, or install a bidet attachment, which costs about thirty to fifty dollars, fits most standard toilets without a plumber, and leaves you cleaner with less paper.
Wipes labeled flushable do not break down the way paper does, and they are a leading cause of clogged household drains and sewer blockages. If you use them, put them in the trash. Choose fragrance-free ones, since scented wipes commonly cause rashes.
Habits that prevent problems
Go when you feel the urge instead of holding it, and do not sit for more than about ten minutes. Long sessions with a phone put sustained pressure on the veins of the rectum, which is how hemorrhoids get started, and straining does the same. If you strain often, the fix is upstream: more fiber, around twenty-five to thirty-five grams a day, more water, and a low footstool that raises your knees above your hips.
Urinating soon after sex may help flush bacteria from the urethra and lower the odds of a urinary tract infection. Change tampons every four to eight hours, never past eight, and wrap used pads and tampons in paper and bin them. None of them belong in the toilet.
What is normal
Anywhere from three bowel movements a day to three a week is within the normal range, provided it passes without pain. The things worth a doctor's visit are specific:
- Blood in the stool or on the paper more than once deserves a look, even when you suspect hemorrhoids.
- Black, tarry stool needs prompt attention.
- A lasting change in your habits that goes on for more than two or three weeks should be checked.
- Burning when you urinate, a constant urge to go, or cloudy urine usually means an infection that needs treatment.
Shared bathrooms
Close the lid before you flush, since flushing throws a fine spray into the air and your toothbrush is nearby. Use the brush when it is needed, run the fan, replace the roll you finished, and wipe up any water you left around the sink.
Note A urinary tract infection that comes with fever, back pain or nausea may have reached the kidneys, and that calls for same-day care rather than waiting it out.
